Burris Fastfire II Review

Category : Optics, Shooting Gear Review, Tactical

As a little kid I can remember using bugs that were squashed on the windshield of our family car as my reticle. I would carefully line up a very unlucky bug with a passing car or a road sign and say “bang”.  Even as an adult with my own children I sometimes catch myself using a bug and the windshield to get in a little target practice. While a bug and windshield may not seem much like actual target practice, they are actually not far off from some very modern sighting systems.

The Burris Fastfire II simplifies the process of lining things up. It has a very bright red dot that you simply place on your intended target. Its kind of like a bug on a windshield. If your eyes have a hard time lining up a front sight, rear sight, and target, you really need to give the Fastfire II a try. No more lining up and trying to focus on 3 different things. The dot and target will both stay in focus. You’ll also find that  the sight is extremely fast with a little practice. Another advantage to the Burris Fastfire II is that you don’t have to have perfect form or even be directly behind the firearm. If you can see the dot from any angle and place it over the target you will achieve a hit.

Badlands Binocular Case Review

Category : Optics, Shooting Gear Review

After I had my 2nd pair of Nikon Monarch Binoculars replaced due to breaking the eyepieces I knew I had to find a way to take better care of my binoculars. I am a big fan of carrying binoculars on a harness. It spreads the weight out, doesn’t put stress on your neck, prevents the binoculars from flopping, and still keeps them in a place that makes using them easy. When it’s cold I keep my binoculars zipped inside my coat and that protects them very well but in warmer weather they take a lot of abuse. The problem is that when I carry my binoculars on a harness they pick up all kinds of dirt, mud, dust, pine needles, sagebrush, etc in the eyepieces. Not only is this hard on the lenses but it is really tough on the pullout eyepieces. They don’t tend to work well when full of grit. I have also found that the harnesses allow the binoculars to hit you in the sternum pretty hard if you get too active.

Alpen 786 20-60×80 Spotting Scope Review

Category : Optics, Shooting Gear Review

With world and local economies looking bleak, we are all looking for ways to save money while getting the best products we can afford. Alpen has been and continues to be a leader in products that offer excellent features, quality, reliability, and performance while maintaining extremely low prices. When compared by price to other optics, Alpen’s optics often far exceed name brand products in performance. This means that if you spend $400 on an Alpen product it will probably be better than other name brand products that cost $400. You might have to spend $600 to get something of equal value and you might have to spend $800 to get something noticeably better.

Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14×40 SF – Scope Review

Category : Optics

The Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 side focus scope was introduced in 2005 along with a totally new line of Buckmaster series scopes. Since their introduction the Nikon Buckmaster has become known as one of the best values in middle priced rifle scopes. I bought one last year that has a BDC reticule, which has holding points built into the reticule to allow for holdover out to 500 yards on a standard caliber and 600 yards on a magnum caliber. I have been impressed with the scope since the day I received it.
