Glock G22 Gen 4 Cold Weather Test (-5°F)

Many people are still questioning whether the Glock Gen 4 is as reliable as the Gen 3. I’m still putting rounds through the Glock Gen 4 G22 we reviewed and have yet to have any kind of reliability problem. I haven’t been using expensive ammunition either. Most of what has gone through the gun has been handloads or the cheapest stuff you can buy at Wal-Mart. The gun has not ever been cleaned, oiled, or greased.

For Thanksgiving we traveled to Eastern Idaho to celebrate the Holiday. Eastern Idaho had experienced some cold weather and so I thought it would be a good opportunity to see if cold weather could cause a malfunction in the Gen 4.

The gun was placed in the snow for 12 hours. The gun was intentionally loaded with a round in the chamber so the slide wouldn't need to be racked to shoot the gun.

Holster 101- Explorations

This is a pancake style from Rhome DesBiens. Stitching and finish are flawless.

Over the years I have used, reviewed and tested literally hundreds of holsters. The classic
designs such as the Milt Sparks Summer Special became classics because they work. This is
attributable to superior design and execution. Others are beautifully made of the finest material but
not worth a hoot for actual carry and use. Others are crude to look at but the get the job done. I Continue reading Holster 101- Explorations

Reduced 308 Cast Bullet Loads for Long Range Practice

In the early 1900’s it was common to do a lot of what was referred to as Gallery Practice. This is shooting on a short range, usually indoors, with reduced loads out of the exact same rifle that is going to be shot at long range. Townsend Whelen who was captain of the US Army Infantry Rifle Team during this same time period talks about this type of practice in a pamphlet he wrote for the military called Suggestions to Military Rifleman. These loads were often loaded with cast bullets and fast pistol powder. The range they were shot at was generally 50 yards.

To practice I use a light cast bullet load with 13 grains of 2400 in a 308 case and a bullet cast out of a Lee 173 grain mold. Commercial Cast bullets such as those from The Oregon Trail Bullet Company can also be used if the shooter doesn’t have the means to cast his own.

It is important that the long range shooter becomes as Continue reading Reduced 308 Cast Bullet Loads for Long Range Practice

3 Days 3 Bucks

I checked the wind for the third time and finally felt comfortable that it wasn’t going to change. I was sure that the buck was here somewhere. I continued to slowly sneak along the trail praying that I wouldn’t step on a stray twig or dead leaf blowing my opportunity. Suddenly, I caught movement ahead of me and I froze. In a ravine about 60yrds ahead, the head and antlers of a buck slowly came into view. Instantly I knew this was the buck…. Continue reading 3 Days 3 Bucks

Shooting Off a Bipod

There is a lot of talk on the Internet about proper bipod technique; but, I have never found anything definitive.  Some use a hard hold, while some use free recoil, and others use something in between.  I shoot F/TR class in NRA high-power matches.  In these matches you shoot strings of 15 to 20 rounds at a 1 minute of angle ten ring and a ½ minute of angle X-ring.  I have found it is very hard to be consistent over this many shots.
Proper technique for shooting off a bipod takes a lot of practice and experimenting with what works best for you

Since there has been no definitive article that I have found on proper bipod hold I decided to do my own testing. Continue reading Shooting Off a Bipod

Vortex Announces new HD Binoculars in their 2011 lineup

Vortex announced some changes today to their lineup of 2011 binoculars.  At first glance it appears as though the new Razor Binoculars will be substantially better than the lineup they are replacing based on their new MSRP.  The Vortex Razor Spotting scope has been praised and credited with being on par with the much more expensive Swarovski spotting scope. Maybe these new Razor HD Binoculars will be on a similar level as other high end German optics.  Watch our website for a review of these new binoculars when they become available.

Vortex also announced a completely new line of very reasonably priced HD Binoculars, the Talons. We’ll be excited to see what these new glasses have to offer.  It looks as though the Talons fall between the Razors and the Vipers in the lineup. They appear to be a bargain based on the MSRP in the press release below.  Watch for a complete review of these later as well.
